SUMMARY:Lecture Series- Brent Runyon: “Found in Matunuck: Historic Buildings and Places Along the Shore”
DESCRIPTION:The lecture will focus on what historic buildings and places Brent has discovered and how he discovered them. Brent Runyon was the executive director of the Providence Preservation Society (PPS) from 2013-2023. In this role he lead PPS through a period of remarkable growth and stability advocating for Providence’s sense of place and its heritage. In 2024 Brent was appointed to the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission. Within the last few years Brent has launched his own historic preservation consulting firm Runyon Heritage Associates and he has recently completed an updated inventory of historic resources along Matunuck’s vulnerable shoreline for the Town of South Kingstown. \nReservations required. WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS. \nThe Eighteenth Amendment\, or Prohibition\, was passed in 1919\, and with it rum- running sprang up in Rhode Island waters. The Coast Guard received resources to combat the illegal smuggling and those rum-runners responded in kind with unique tactics and adaptation of recreational watercraft to protect and expand their business. In this presentation Astrid Drew and Heather Kisilywicz from the Steamship Historical Society of America will speak on the rum-running trade in Rhode Island and how it impacted the shipping industry on Narragansett Bay. DESCRIPTION:In the 1700s\, the colony of Rhode Island dominated the North American slave trade\, bringing more than 100\,000 captives from Africa to the Americas. Most were obtained in exchange for rum distilled in New England from molasses\, a byproduct of the refinement of sugar grown by enslaved Africans in the West Indies. Over thirty distilleries in Rhode Island produced rum for the African slave trade before its legal end in 1808. Reservations suggested as seating is limited. RSVP HERE!
